Abstract
The article deals with structural analysis that focuses on the recognition of morphemes: prefixes, roots, suffixes. The main structural types of Modern English words and conversion, derivation and compositon are the most productive ways of word building. All the time the analyses is based on the patterns characteristic of the English vocabulary.
The process of word-formation is an elementary case of the transformational analyses, in which the semantic similarity or difference of words is revealed by a prescribed model and following certain rules into a different form. Derivational and functional morphemes may happen to be identical in sound form, but they are substantially different in meaning, function and structural properties. The results of morphemic analyses and the structural word-formation analyses practically coincide. There are other cases, where they are of necessity separated. It should also be mentioned that some morphemes are capable of forming words without adding other morphemes.
